Last summary from the press conference

Our friends over at Cint posted a complete audio recording of the press conference. I have written the most important points from it here:
  • Their competition uses about 50-60% of their budget on advertising.
  • Competitors have contacted them and want to collaborate.
  • The press conference was delayed because Valdi had to go to Copenhagen and have an important meeting with UNICEF.
  • The other persons in Medison are not really hired; they are just on vacation from their normal jobs in the furniture business and military.
  • Vista is no problem, you just need more RAM.
  • There is no risk of having the same name as another multinational company according to their legal councils.
  • The company doesn't have any economical assets.
  • The reason that they didn't believe that this would become so big is because they only announced the product and website to a small local website at first.
  • The reason that the project started is that their CEO didn’t have any income in Brazil and needed some way to gain money.
  • They are still in negotiations with logistics and service organizations, even that the first computers will be delivered the coming weeks.
  • VAT is supposed to be paid by Medison.
  • In total contrast to what 2CO says, Medison says that they are the sellers and only using 2CO as a payment provider. They claim that contract is between the consumers and Medison Europe Limited and NOT 2CO.
  • The reason they chose Fedora is that they hasn’t looked at the alternatives and doesn't know anything about them. They may change Linux distribution in the future if any company behind the distributions wants to pay for it.
  • Medison only have "virtual offices" since they are so few.
  • He is dead serious about running for prime minister. He will do this without being part of a political party and he will do this as soon as possible. It's important to note that this isn't an answer forced by the journalists; he talks in detail about it.

Killen är ju mytoman rakt igenom.
Fattar inte att pressen inte pressar honom med vettiga frågor.

He... he uhmmm... Wait.

He created the cheapest-laptop-in-the-world plants in Brazil.. since he didn't have any money... and wanted some?

This is not just plain old surreal, they gotta come up with a new word just for that, I can't even think of one right now.

"Valdi had to go to Copenhagen and have an important meeting with UNICEF"

Can we please get the name of the UNICEF person so we can call and check?

Or is that name a secret, too, in case the office mates should get jealous like the other customers of the secret laptop factory?

It's kind of obvious that Mr Valdi is hubristic. Becoming prime minister in Sweden without a party would probably require a majority of the votes of the people. And that's, frankly, quite impossible.

But besides that, I'm beginning to think that this whole thing is really quite brilliant. Let's say Medison has no margins at all for their computers. Manufacturing, shipping (from Asia), is precisely covered by the retail price. Then Medison could sell Windows, more RAM, bigger HD, support deals, extras etc. Their giving away the notebook and make their money on extras - just like XBOX did.

It's a brilliant idea, but the question is whether Valdi is capable of pulling it through. Even if it's a scam or if they fail, there will most certainly be another company doing the same thing soon.

"The other persons in Medison are not really hired; they are just on vacation from their normal jobs in the furniture business and military."

So Medison with the Brazil plants now consists not of 5 employees but one employee - the CEO.

Who has no money.

And should deliver thousands of $150 laptops only next week.

This guy truly broke something deep inside me. I'm really desparately looking for some sort of clue leading to a humongous, ginormous, extraspectacular twist to the whole story, so it starts making sense again.

"But besides that, I'm beginning to think that this whole thing is really quite brilliant."

You only think so since the entire thing is too abstract for you to grasp.

You're trying to fit it into a model that makes sense.

A $150 laptop wouldn't simply have zero margins. It'll have heavy, very heavy negative margins which they can't recover from either site ads, installed trial craplets or anything.

What sort of extras would recover over 2 times the current price. Yo give examples with consoles like XBOX 360. Don't forget that for a small console without monitor, battery, or mobility features, Microsoft are losing money at $350 on it. And they realize enormous saves from the huge scale they produce this on.

This is one guy with no money and no brain.

The parts alone would cost him nearly $300. And there aren't any extras to sale a-plenty in near sight. A laptop is a laptop. Yoy can use it as it is. XBOX is useless without games, and all games pass through Microsoft by definition in their license.

What's he on, and how do I get it?

Sure, I realize this is most certainly the case. Let me put it in other words: selling a laptop with zero margin and making money on extras is a brilliant idea. Kind of risky business though... :)

"Medison only have "virtual offices" since they are so few."

So few - he said the only official employee of the company is him, plus some people having fun on their vacation.

So yea, "they are so few" is a gross understatement.

I wonder who runs his Brazil factories. Do they run on their own there?

He's one guy with a company spanning the entire effin globe.

This is ineffably weird.

People talking to old business partners of Valdi confirms the picture that Valdi is not 100% living in the same world as the rest of us…

This is a man with thousands and thousands of ideas but no skill or connection to reality what so ever…

I.e. everything is just empty air and bullshit. It might not be the typical scam, it could be "mental illness"…

It is sad to see that Swedish media bought it without even blinking an eye.

In psychology, mythomania (also known as pseudologia fantastica or pathological lying) is a condition involving compulsive lying by a person with no obvious motivation. The affected person might believe their lies to be truth, and may have to create elaborate myths to reconcile them with other facts. Among famous mythomaniacs in history was King Frederik VII of Denmark and Sir Douglas Conway of Suffolk.

A pathological liar is someone who often embellishes his or her stories in a way that he or she believes will impress people. It may be that a pathological liar is different from a normal liar in that a pathological liar believes the lie he or she is telling to be true—at least in public—and is "playing" the role. He or she sometimes is seen to have a serious mental problem that needs to be rectified.

It is not clear, however, that this is the case. It could also be that pathological liars know precisely what they are doing. Confused hashes of history and wishes are called confabulation. "Pathological liar" is a synonym for symptoms.

Even though pathological lying is not recognized as a clinical disorder, legal court cases often require that the plaintiff prove that the defendant is aware that he or she is lying. This proof is most important in cases of slander and/or liability.

Pathological liars often actually convince themselves that they are telling the truth, which in turn can alter polygraph tests and other questioning. Some have observed that when caught in a lie, pathological liars tend to become hostile or try to disregard the fact they lied; often playing it off as a joke.

The "old business partners" and people that know Valdi from before is at the rumor stage currently. It's nothing that I want to pblish on the blog, byt yes atleast two persons has stated information like "People talking to old business partners of Valdi confirms the picture that Valdi is not 100% living in the same world as the rest of us…", but it's not any more information beyond that.

Could we dig up some information of these old partners (to contact them and ask questions)?

They talked about someone from the "Edison project". The name should be "Jimmy" (something). It must be possible to get in touch with him?

There is an e-mail adress on the following page:

That Jimmy is the guy I contacted.

Please note that he has nothing to do with Medison today but he has information about Edison, Medison and Valdi. It is very strange that the press did not contact him...

Please, be also aware of the Swedish time (CET) if you call him!

How about the rest of the notes from the article that wouldnt have a direct bias on this being a scam? Any information that does actually sound promising?

The only thing that could scale this story in its hummungus crazy-a-like time line is, of course, that the computers would be delivered in the next weeks. And then I also want my $150.00 dlls notebook.

Honestly? Nothing. Absolutely nothing that he said was trustworthy.

What about the information regarding:
"sorry, was a bit late, had to help UNESCO"?

"Medison is up and running now so I am palnning to use the extra time to be elected as the prime minister of Sweden. And, as I am more trustworthy than any political organization in Sweden, I’ll do it on my own" ?

:-)

Laugh or cry, that is the question …
